Discussions over the lunch table

With the whole situation last weekend with Harold Camping predicting the end of the world on Saturday has set the whole world in motion. More and more people are talking about the end times and what it means.

I am reading a book called the Seraph’s Seal, which is a fiction book about the end times (a review to come when I am finished). It sparked a conversation in the break room at work yesterday and some odd conversation.

I was with two ladies and when I said that it was about the end times it brought out the whole Harold Camping ordeal. I stated that no man is going to be able to predict the end times, the rapture. Only God knows when that will happen.

But then it also brought out some other weird topics that I could not refute even though deep down I felt they were completely untrue. One of the ladies brought up that Hell is in the center of the earth. I have never heard that, nor did I think that on my own, but she could not give me biblical references, only that her pastor told her that.

I did some looking on the internet and that one seems to be a topic of confusion, some sites listed biblical references that could be persuaded to mean that Hell is in the center of the earth, but I could not find anything biblical that definitely said that.

The other part of the conversation was how long Christians (believers who have confessed their sins and have a relationship with the Lord) are going to be on earth during the beginnings of the end times. The lady at work was persistent that Christians would be raptured before the anti-christ came into power and that during the tribulation time after the rapture God would disillusion everyone so that they could not believe in him even after the rapture.

I have studied a lot, but the prophecy of the end times is hard. I knew that things she was saying were not correct, but I did not have irrefutable biblical references to give her. I spent time on the internet last night looking up biblical end time prophesy and trying to find a bible study, from a trustworthy source, to help me understand the end times better.

I felt so stiffiled in that situation. I knew better, I base all my information out of the bible. Even if a pastor says it, I need to read it for myself, study it for myself. Although I am sure the ladies at lunch did not want a biblical discussion and debate at that time, it made me realize how little I really knew.

For sure I know that we need to be ready, we need to believe and we need to realize that our time is fleeting. I am ready and excited to see the end times start, to see God work in our last days and to stand up for the faith we have even when we are treated as aliens. I am most excited to go to Heaven.

But, I feel that I need to be prepared while I am here on earth.

Does anyone have any good information on a bible study about the end times? I know fiction-wise Left Behind is a great series, but I want biblical verses and facts when I am presented with questions. Please let me know if you do!

  1. I would just read Revelation and research the verses and I came across questions. For me the least confusing way to come up with any answers (but for the record I don't think any of us really know what will happen)

As for hell being in the center of earth the church I went to as a kid preached that, I no longer really think of it or where it is because it's pretty irrelevant but I definitely always heard it was in the center of the earth as a kid *but then Heaven was "in the sky".

  2. I do remember watching a documentary where there is a culture that believes hell is in the middle of the Earth and that there is an opening to hell. I cannot remember where this opening is, but it is an active volcano or hot spring that they believe is the gate to hell. Of course, they are not Christians. I wish I could remember more about it.

  3. Through out history, people have given many explanations of hell. I merely say heaven is the prensence of God and hell is the absense of God. We can give hell every horrible description, but the "absense of God" (absense of all joy, all love, all beauty, all majesty, etc.) sounds pretty bad to me!

We can't get into the prensence of a perfect God without the perfect covering of Christ!

I don't get into theological debates unless I feel God preparing me. If the Holy Spirit hasn't stirred the topic in my heart, I will not discuss it. We are God's messengers, and there is liberty in waiting for His go-ahead.

  4. Kay Arthur does a great inductive study of Revelations that I found really helpful! It's put out be precept ministries, that might help... never heard of that thing going on until last sunday.. it was very interesting, though not the first time someone's tried to predict the end.. i remember my mom believe that back in the 80's and me eating all the potatoe chips I could because I thought I was going to die mahahahaha.
    yeah.
    good times. lol

  5. This is a very profound subject that we should have accurate, biblical information about. But it is also very complex and takes indepth study. Thank you for sharing, your post was informative and brought up some interesting ideas people have. I enjoy commentaries by J. Vernon McGee. He has one for Revelation and does a great job sharing Scripture in an easy to understand manner. Blessings to you!

  6. I too really like studying the end times but feel less than able to discuss it with people. I am better on the internet because I can take the time to form my words, look up texts, etc. But in person, I struggle to think fast enough to explain what I mean or be able to find the texts that I know are in the Bible somewhere.

A couple years ago, my husband and I went to a really good Revelation seminar presented by Pastor Shawn Boonstra. He did a good job explaining end time events and supported his points with Scripture the whole way through. At the end of the seminar, they handed out copies of the presentation on DVD and the accompanying book. Somehow my husband and I each ended up with a copy.

Would you be interested in the extra copy? The DVD is a 5 part presentation and the book is 120 pages. I think it's a really good starting point for a study on end time events. If you want my extra copy just let me know! I can drop it in the mail this week. :)
